EK Supported Child Development

In partnership with families, childcare providers and community partners, the East Kootenay Supported Child Development Program promotes and facilitates quality inclusion for children throughout the East Kootenay region (Cranbrook/Kimberley, Creston, Invermere, Golden, Elk Valley). EKSCD provides services for children aged 0-12 who attend a licensed or regulated childcare program, have an identified developmental disability/delay, and require additional support to meet their individual needs to participate fully with their peers.  Priority is placed on children ages 0-5, children that are eligible for school may only receive support in afterschool programs.

EKSCD is based on the philosophy of inclusion, supporting the right of all children of diverse abilities to actively participate in the childcare program of their choice. Inclusion is an approach to delivering service in which all children are welcomed, supported and valued.

We believe that:

  • All children have the right to attend the childcare program their parents choose.
  • Every child has the right to the extra support they may need to participate in the range of activities and developmental experiences at the childcare program.
  • The earlier intervention and support are provided for children with developmental delays or disabilities, the more impact it will have on the child’s lifelong learning, emotional well-being and social interactions.
